From the publisher. In order to create a compelling story the writer must transport him- or herself into the work. But writing about family members, even when most of them have been dead and buried for nearly a century, as I did in my first novel, Cane River, a fictionalized saga about four generations of colored Creole slave women, carried additional challenges. All writers face the risk of revealing more about themselves and their worldviews than they might intend. In cases like my own they must also worry about disclosing more than their family might be comfortable with and interpreting this personal history differently from other relatives. The writer might be accused of employing a thinly disguised description of one or all family members, and they may not be happy about it.

I miss the people I was fortunate to see, create alongside, encourage and be encouraged by , tease, collaborate and — on select occasions — debate with on a daily basis. Working from home has allowed me to exercise new technological muscles and methods of collaboration, while also remembering how awesome it is to fulfill our mission alongside other great people.
I rely on Zoom and Cisco Webex equally. Webex for work, and Zoom for classes and board meetings. Do you have a designated work space? Are you working the same number of hours each day? A bit less than I would have been with evening concerts and events in the theater.
Most of my time is spent on the phone, Zoom, and Webex. A great majority of it is spent in Microsoft Word and Gmail. Routine is everything. I find that mostly sticking to it yields a fruitful workday and peaceful socially distant life. After one more stop at the refrigerator, I typically use this time to go on a walk or call a friend 1 p. Usually, I report to the couch for dreaming … dreaming comes easily after some time spent outside and take good notes.
Get back to work. Secret to sanity: Dedicate a space for work, a space for your favorite indoor recreational activity, and a space for spirituality. Call people, and ask them how they are doing. Dream about the future and what your individual responsibility is in seeing those dreams come to fruition. Be good to yourself, and decide what it means to be good to others especially right now. And fill your refrigerator with things that will bless your well-being.

When faced with no choice but to physically submit themselves to the men who hold the power of life and death over them, each woman ultimately does what she feels is best for the resulting children. The means by which the family is moved forward is by bleaching the line through the generations.
