Background Because of the focus by utilities on producing power as efficiently as possible, the reliability of major motors in utility power plants is being examined much more carefully. In-service failures are to be avoided and when motors have to be repaired, plants want to ensure proper repair methods are applied. LEMUG has produced motor rewind specifications to ensure that plants are knowledgeable of motor repair work. Objective The objective of this study was to develop a user guide for the vacuum-pressure impregnation VPI process for medium voltage stator windings. The guide discusses the principle materials and practices used to manufacture stator windings and include material relevant to random wound stators.

Conference Craig, W E ; Mulford, T J - Transactions of the American Nuclear Society; USA As nuclear power plants continue in the transition to a strictly operating and maintenance mode, the engineering involvement required to specify and procure replacement parts and components continues to increase.

The evaluation process for a replacement item has one simple goal: to specify an effective set of technical and quality requirements that will result in the procurement of an item meeting the plant design basis. The evaluation process is depicted in a simplified block diagram showing the elements of engineering evaluation from a functional perspective. Utilities have taken several approaches to involve engineering in the procurement process.

A common result for the approaches is the additional operations and maintenance O M cost imposed by the added resource requirements.

Procurement engineering productivity is a key element in controlling this business area. Technical evaluations include the functionally based safety classification of replacement components and parts lacking a master parts list , the determination of dedication requirements for safety-related commercial-grade items, the preparation of a procurement specification to maintain the licensed design bases, and the equivalency evaluation of alternate items not requiring the design-change process.

Administrative duties include obtaining technical review of vendor-supplied documentation, identifying obsolete parts and components, resolving material nonconformances, initiating the design-change process for replacement items as needed , and providing technical support to O M. Although most utilities may not perform or require all the noted activities, a large percentage will apply to each utility station.

Performance-based audits offer means of raising the level of confidence. This confidence comes from evaluation of important features of the product and the processes and activities that produce it.

This document does not add requirements to those in existing codes, standards, or regulations. Performance-based audits are one element of an effective procurement program.

During the previous design and construction phases of nuclear plants, the focus of safety classifications was on the system and component level of equipment. Today, with the emphasis on operation and maintenance of existing plants, the focus of safety classification has shifted to detailed evaluation of component and piece-part safety classification.

The safety classification methodology and criteria in this guideline uses a top-down approach. The process may be entered at any level, but both higher and lower level classifications should be examined when this is accomplished.

This guideline will aid trained personnel in performing safety classification evaluations. These evaluations, particularly at the component and piece-part level, have significant cost-benefit potential when procuring replacement items during the performance of plant operations and maintenance activities.

The material in this guideline does not add requirements to those in existing codes, standards, and regulations. The guidance herein is intended to complement existing information and practices. Engineering involvement is shown to be a key element of an effective procurement program.

As a side note, if rpri quality program follows NQA-1, the section for Basic Requirement 7 includes requirements for Commercial Grade Dedication which differ based on the edition followed. The first question received is: Apart from the QA manual, there are mainly two types of such documents: This is a great question because it can be very difficult to find epir for commercial grade dedication.

Guidelines for the technical evaluation of replacement items in nuclear power plants NCIG As far as the dedication process goes, the requirements for it are somewhat loose. Removed non-conforming items are returned to the Material Control quarantine area or to the shop for repair, if a repair was chosen as the method of disposition for the non-conformity. You can always perform full CGD of the items, but this guidance allows the OEM to perform an acceptance process that is appropriate based on the advantages that the OEM has in regards to controlling the drawings and commercial process and receiving additional feedback from commercial uses of the items. After World War II an effort was made to better understand the shelf life of rubbers. It was made in order to summarize all the information and requirements on age control up until that point. All of these efforts were made to keep a good rotating inventory of elastomeric goods. However, there was a reference to ASA, a different age control document.
